Pain accompanying acute and/or chronic illnesses, or persisting for months or years after the resolution of such conditions (such as the debilitating post-herpetic neuralgia), has become a significant medical emergency and a serious social issue for 20-25% of the Italian population. It is a critical concern that cannot be ignored by a premier medical facility.

When pain becomes a daily companion and affects all aspects of a patient’s life, their perception of their own body turns into a negative experience. The patient’s view of the world, daily routines, work activities, and social and relational life—all are drastically altered. Thus, pain-related illness should be regarded as a debilitating condition with far-reaching health and social consequences.

This is in line with Law 38 of 2010, which ensures the right of individuals to be free from suffering and includes pain assessment among the vital signs that must be monitored and treated.
