Neurosurgery: Addressing Complex Disorders of the Nervous System

The nervous system, comprising the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, is a complex and vital part of the human body responsible for controlling essential functions, movement, emotions, cognitive abilities, and sensory experiences. Neurosurgery is the specialized field focused on the surgical treatment of a wide range of structural and functional disorders of the nervous system.

At Ars Medica Clinic, located in the heart of North Rome, our Neurosurgery Service is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases, damage, and disorders affecting the nervous system, both directly and indirectly.

Our neurosurgeons handle:

Intrinsic lesions of nervous tissue, both neoplastic and non-neoplastic.

Functional lesions and disorders, such as trigeminal neuralgia and dysfunctional pain syndromes.

Supportive structures of nervous tissue, including spinal diseases that affect sensitivity and muscle strength, often causing pain (e.g., sciatica, radiculopathies, stenosis, and gait disorders).

Our team of professionals utilizes cutting-edge technologies, such as high-resolution neuroimaging and brain mapping procedures. When necessary, we employ innovative and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Conditions Treated:

We address a variety of conditions, including:

  • Intrinsic and extrinsic tumors of nervous tissue (e.g., meningiomas, gliomas, metastases).
  • Vascular disorders (e.g., hematomas and aneurysms).
  • Spinal disorders (e.g., herniated discs, stenosis, vertebral instability), often using microscopic and minimally invasive techniques to facilitate recovery.
  • Nerve conditions (e.g., schwannomas, entrapment syndromes, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy).
  • Dysfunctional syndromes (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, epilepsy).
  • Chronic non-oncological pain.

Special attention is given to the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Our center is at the forefront of both medical and minimally invasive surgical treatments, attracting patients from all over Italy.

Surgical treatments involve a brief stay in a day-hospital setting. We use modern equipment that allows real-time monitoring of key parameters. The surgical techniques employed are percutaneous and include radiofrequency rhizotomy, pulsed radiofrequency, glycerol rhizotomy, and peripheral injections. These are performed using a cannula needle under local anesthesia, targeting the Gasserian ganglion in the skull, where the pain-sensitive fibers of the face converge (1st, 2nd, and 3rd branches of the trigeminal nerve), effectively blocking pain perception. This approach is viable even in advanced age, including the eighth and ninth decades of life, with ongoing care provided by specialized staff.

Our goal is to deliver personalized care. To achieve this, our professionals work closely with neurologists, radiologists, and rehabilitation therapists to ensure comprehensive treatment for our patients.
